We recommend that youth be at least in grade 7 so that they can handle the equipment safely and are tall enought to fit into a boat.

Adult

Age 18+

Rowing is a low-impact activity that is accessible to people of all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels. As long has you can swim and bend your knees, you can probably row.

The Learn to Row program introduces you to the sport of rowing. These skill developing classes begin with the basics.

What you will learn...

Rowing Technique

The instructors will teach basic rowing terminology (stroke, catch, etc) as they demonstrate an introductory rowing technqiue. An ergometer (erg) is used on land to simulate the rowing movements you will experience on the water. All students will practice this technique on the ergs until they are comfortable and understand the basic movements and rhythms of rowing.

While on the water, the coach will help students understand basic balance concepts in the boat, adjust their rowing technique, and provide tips for those eager students wanting to learn more.

A good rowing technique will allow you to enjoy the sport and your surroundings.

What you will learn...

Boat Handling

Proper boat handling is important for the well being of everyone in the class, as lifting boats incorrectly is not fun for the body.

We will show you how to safely lift, move, and place boats in the water. During the learn to row classes you will always lift boats with at least one other person, probably more.

The boats (rowing shells) are very expensive. If you have any concerns about lifting the boats, please let an instructor know so we can substitute someone in your place for the lifting process. Boats are very fragile - dropping a boat will cause severe damage to the shell.

What you will learn...

Safety

Your instructors will teach you how to safely maintain your balance while getting in and out of the boat, how to carry oars, how to use the supplied personal floatation device (PFD), and some basic boat etiquette.

All classes will start with the very stable and safe 4 person boats (quad). These boats are ideal for learning as they allow you to focus on movements.

Depending on the time of the year and the progression of the class, the instructors will also teach you how to get back into your boat if it should tip over.

What you will learn...

Teamwork

It's a thrill to be in a 4 person boat when everyone is rowing together as a single unit. Instructors will teach you how to move in harmony with the other people in your boat, so your rowing compliments each other.

You will learn to row in a 2 person and 4 person boat. Rowing in unison with your boat-mates is essential for balance, speed, and having a great time.

If weather or air quality causes unsafe conditions and results in class cancellation, the class will be rescheduled.

After School

Rowing is an incredible sport that will benefit your kids both physically and mentally. Get your teenager(s) started early with a low-impact sport they can enjoy for a lifetime. Rowing will help your teenager(s) meet and exceed the daily exercise recommendations and keep them engaged in a wonderful outdoor activity.

Team Building

Rowing is the perfect team building activity as it requires collaboration, trust, focus, and mental grit to move the boat efficiently. The Team Building program for corporations is designed to help workplace peers or staff build strong bonds through the process of overcoming a difficult challenge - rowing.

LTR Graduates

Upon completion of Learn to Row, you are encouraged to join a rowing session with members.

KRC offers several options so that you can continue to row:

1) Become a member - convert to season membership for a reduced price;

2) Buy a 10-row punch-card - limit is one punch-pass per season so if you think you'll row more than 10 times, membership is the way to go;

3) Pay-as-you-go with drop-in rowing.

Rowing is a technical sport and the more you practice, the better you will become!
